About
This barrio owes the name to the old Recoletos cloister which used to be located there. The heart of the barrio is the Pilar Basilica built in 1715 and declared national historic monument May 21, 1942.
Next to it you'll find the Recoleta cemetery which was the first public cemetery in Argentina. There lie the remaining of a great number of people who had a role in the destiny of the country. It is also famous for its rich architecture.
On the other side the Centro Cultural Recoleta is located. This is a free community center where you can always find great artwork by local and international artists. There's also room for performing arts and various art classes are given.
Next you'll find Buenos Aires Design, a shopping mall that is all about interior design. There's a few stores that sell items that you could take home even if you live on another continent. You really can't miss it.
Across from Buenos Aires Design is the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum) and further down the National Library with it's one of the kind architecture.
Surrounding all these buildings are public gardens where people go spend their free time or walk their dogs. On the weekends you'll find all sorts of arts and crafts in a very crowded outdoor market. Musicians perform on weekends too.
A block down the road is located the Palais de Glace. Crowned with an imposing glass cupola, the building was designed in 1910 with the purpose of accommodating an ice skating ring. Today it's a museum.
On top of the hill, you will find many nice bars and restaurants. At the end of the cemetery, right across the street the Village Recoleta is located with more restaurants, a great book store and movie theaters.
