About

The old town of Vratsa is located 112 km north of the capital of Bulgaria. Its name derives from the old Bulgarian word for huge doors, referencing an impressive pile of rocks at the base of the mountain. In old times this was an entrance to a passage through the Old Mountain, also known as the Balkan, the longest and largest mountain in Bulgaria.

Popular among locals is sipping coffee in the central square while viewing the incredible scenery. A short 15 min walk away is a 600m wall tower of vertical rocks. Rock climbers can be frequently spotted in the area.

The highest waterfall in Bulgaria, Skaklya, is also nearby providing excelling swimming opportunities on sunny days.

There are also many historical places in the area. Sanctuaries, tombs, treasures of old tracian tribes, museums, and monasteries are abundant in the area.

Routes and Itineraries
There are more than 20 tourist routes beginning outside the town, including a 2 hour route for children, and a 3 to 4 hour route to the Ledenica cave, one of Bulgaria's largest caves. It is also possible to reach Ledenica cave by car. In the cave area live shepherds who offer authentic Bulgarian white cheese at a very good price and irresistible taste.

Vratsa can be reached either by train or bus from Sofia. The train is cheaper, but takes longer. As the route is very scenic however, it is time well spent.
