Calgary Olympic Park, Alberta

About

Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988. I went and visited their Olympic Plaza in the summer of 2008. It's technically called Canada Olympic Park .

Now, because it was summer, there wasn't a lot to do. Because you know, they hosted the winter olympics which requires snow. In the summer it's a large empty complex, a giant park, really a series of hills. You can see the ski lifts and the massive ski jumps. There's a visitors center to buy old olympic stuff, or new stuff for neighboring Vancouver's 2010 Olympics. I like stepping in the shoes of history though, and it's not crowded and not too far from Calgary.

If you're in the area, it's certainly worth a quick stop. Plus it's free (mostly).

How to get there

On the Trans-Canada highway (Canada's only highway) right outside of Calgary. You'll see the ski jumps from a distance.
