About

Puerto Viejo is an ecliptic old surf village rich with color and a mix of locals and transplants on the east of Costa Rica. It is fairly remote and about as far south you can get before you reach the Panama Canal. Unlike the west coast, this town is not very touristy. The port offers a colorful local environment, sumptuous seafood, and relaxing beaches. The area also features plenty of wildlife, as the monkey and frogs can get quite loud at night.

The drive from San Jose to Limon has some fun spots such as fruit stands and rain forests to stop off and see. One possible route is taking the road along the south shore, past Pureto Viejo for a serene cafe right off the coast. Head west and you'll hit some local towns, the Bri Bri tribe and a Dole plant.

Spanish is the main language, but most locals speak some English so communication shouldn't be a problem. Some stores also accept US currency.
