The capital of Ghana, Accra is a pleasant coastal city. Ghana is a West African nation. Buildings of Accra reflect its transition from a suave suburb of 1800’s to a bustling modern metropolis of today. Culture of this city is the melting pot of many cultures.
Location and Climate
Located on the Atlantic Coast, Accra is just at a few degrees from equator. Although Ghana is a warm country but climate of Accra is very pleasant. Having tropical climate, Accra is warm and humid with cool breeze blowing from Atlantic Ocean.
Attractions
Thousands of tourist flock to Accra for its great and interesting tourist attractions. There are many monuments designed with French architecture, modern era buildings, many historical monuments and an interesting museum. The museum has the great collection about heritage and traditions of Ghana. Other well known places in Accra are of National Theatre building, Centre for national Cultural Centre, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Independence Square and the fishing port at James Town. Other city sites are Liberation Square, tropical gardens, the Art centre, grave of the first Ghanaian president, Kwame Nkrumah, Christianborg Castle, built in the 17th century by the Danes and WEB DuBois Memorial.
Beaches of Accra
Some very good beaches adorn the landscape of Accra. The most popular and the most crowded beaches are Labadi and Kokrobite. Here you have to shell out few bucks as entry fees. Coco beach in Teshie is the right place for people wants to stroll in quiet. Other quiet beaches are Misty and Ada, at the mouth of Volta River.
Shopping and eating in Accra
While in Accra, you have opportunity to taste the African cuisines and international food. There are many good accommodations and restaurants in Osu.
For shopping Makola Market is the best place where you can find streets full of fabric shops. There, you can pick wax-print, beaded, embroidered cotton and tulle cloths as African special.
