About

This flourishing port city on the banks of river Tapti is one of the oldest trading centres of India. The British East India Company established its first ware houses in Surat in 1612 . It is reowned for fine silk, exquisite brocades and diamond business. The main attractions are - 14th century Fort ; Rangupavan, one of the biggest open air theatres in the country ; Sardar Patel Musuem and Textile Market etc.

Dutch Garden — The ancient Dutch gardens, the Dutch cemetery and Makaipul, the ancient original port from where the ships sailed to other parts of the world are other attractions.

The Old Fort — The Old Fort was built by Muhammad bin Tughluq in the 1546 to fortify the defence against the Bhils. It is now used for municipal offices.

Rangupavan — It is an open air theater with a 18 meters by 10.5 meters stage and a capacity of around 4000 spectators . Rangupavan was recently closed.

Vansada National Park — It is situated in the Navsari district and is home to leopards, tigers, panthers,pythons and wild boars.

Science City — In City Light. It is being developed by the Surat Municipal Corporation and will be one of the most attractive places in the city in the near future


How to get there

By Air
The nearest airport from Surat is Vadodara (140kms). Several airlines operate flights to and from Vadodara connecting it to cities like: Mumbai, Bhavnagar.

By Road
An extensive network of roads connects Surat to the important cities in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. Ahmedabad (267kms) and Mumbai (326kms) are linked by road to Surat.

By Rail
Surat has a railway station of its own. It is one of the main junctions on the Mumbai - Delhi - Ahmedabad broad gauge line. Many important trains service the railway station regularly connecting it to several major cities in Gujarat and the sates of western India.
