About

The pictures of the Taj Majal so often depicted on postcards does not adequately convey the true picture and art of the palace. Taj Mahal is the most preserved and architecturally beautiful building in the world. It is a sign of love, built by an emperor in memory of his beloved wife to show the world how much he loved her. The construction took twenty years. Sir Edwin Arnold describes it as "Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones".

Taj Mahal is situated on the banks of Yamuna River in Agra. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the palace in loving memory of his wife Mumtaz. She perished in Burhanpur during a campaign to crush a rebellion. Her death was a turning point in Shah Jahan's life, and within just few months he had lost all love for life.

While Mumtaz was alive, she asked for four promises from Shah Jahan. First, that he should wed for a second time; second, that he construct Taj mahal in her memory; third, that he be kind to their children; and fourth, that he visit Taj Mahal on her death anniversary. Taj Mahal was completed in 22 years and construction began in the year 1631. Nearly twenty one thousand workers and elephants were deployed to bring material to the site, often bought from many parts of India and Asia. Taj Mahal was designed by an Iranian designer and it was built so well that people called it a “symbol of eternal love”.

People have many different opinions about Taj Mahal but those who are in love should visit it once to notice how an emperor was in love with her wife.

How to get there

Taj Majal can be accessed by bus, train, or car. Agra is well connected with the airport. Trains and buses frequently depart from Delhi.
