Pantheon

The "Temple of all the gods," is one of the best preserved buildings in Rome and a famous landmark. Built by Emperor Hadrian in AD 118, the building is dedicated to St. Mary and the Martyrs.

You'll find a beautifully symmetrical dome, with a circular opening at the top "the oculus" as the only light. Rain falls through as well, but there is a drainage system.

The building was turned into a church in the 7th century when passerbys claimed they were being haunted by demons.

Since the Renaissance the Pantheon has been used as a tomb. Among those buried there are the painters Raphael and Annibale Carracci, the composer Arcangelo Corelli, and the architect Baldassare Peruzzi.

How to get there

The Pantheon is at the PIazza della Rotonda.
Take one of the many buses, or walk. It is centrally located.
