About

Itsukushima, popularly known as Miyajima, is a small island just outside of Hiroshima. It is most famous for a giant red torii gate built on its shores. Itsukushima is referred to as one of Japan's top three most beautiful sights, if not its most, and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Visitors should be aware of the hours of the tides during their visit. During high tides, Itsukushima Shrine and the torii gate give the appearance of floating on water, while in low tides, it is possible to actually walk up to the torii. The island is relatively mountainous and offers great hikes through many temples and shrines.
