About

Himeji Castle is Japan's most frequently photographed castle, and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its tall stone foundations and white-washed walls make it a beautiful sight to behold, particularly during the sakura season.

The castle was originally built in 1346, but was damaged in several wars. The present keep stands from 1601. Visitors can climb up the castle, which is a maze of complex walkways so as to detract intruders.

In popular culture, Himeji Castle was featured in The Last Samurai.
