About

Enoshima (江の島) is a small pleasant island about 80 minutes south of Tokyo, near Yokohama. A bridge connects the island to the mainland, and it is easily accessible by train.

With shrines scattered throughout the island, Enoshima is dedicated to Hadaka-benten, or the naked goddess of entertainment.

There is also a botanical garden and observation lighthouse, created by Samuel Cocking, a British merchant. The top of the observation lighthouse offers wonderful views of the whole island.

The island also contains interesting caves "Enoshima Iwaya" created by sea erosion. For a small fee, you will get a candle and can walk through some of the caves.

From Tokyo take the Odakyu line to Katase Enoshima, and walk a short distance across the bridge to the island.

Also consider using the Odakyu Enoshima free pass, especially if you want to combine this trip with one to Kamakura:

You can also take the JR line to Yokosuka, and then change for the Enoden to get to Enoshima.
