Ginkakuji (Silver Pavillion)
About
Ginkakuji is a beautiful Zen temple modeled after the nearby Kinkakuji. The temple initially served as a retirement villa for shogunate Ashikaga Yoshimasa. After his death in 1490, it was converted into a Zen temple. Although its name literally means the Silver Pavillion, plans to cover the temple in silver were not actually realized.
How to get there
Buses from Kyoto Station frequently circle the shrines and temples. Take bus 5, 17, or 100 from Kyoto Station.
