Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavillion)

Kinkakuji temple is one of Kyoto's most representative temples and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its name literally means the Golden Pavillion. It is a magnificent zen temple covered with pure-leaf gold.

Kinkakuji was originally built in 1397 as a shogun estate. Since then it has been burnt down and rebuilt multiple times. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955 after a fanatic monk burnt it down in 1950.

How to get there

Frequent buses depart from Kyoto station which circle about famous temples such as this one. Take bus 101 or 205.
