About

Kiyomizu Temple is one of Kyoto's most representative temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The beautiful wooden temple juts over the forest affording visitors an impressive view of the city. It is especially scenic during the spring and fall, where sakura and autumn foliage decorate the hillsides.

The temple dates from the year 798, but the present construction stands from 1633. Its name, which translates to "clear water", derives from the waterfall within its halls which is said to have healing powers.

In 2007, Kiyomizu Temple was one of the finalists for the 7 new wonders of the world.

How to get there

The temple is a 15 min bus ride from Kyoto station. Take either bus 100 or 206 and get off at Kiyomizu-michi or Gojo-zaka.
