Todaiji Temple, Nara Prefecture

About

Todaiji, or "Eastern Great Temple", houses Japan's largest Buddha statue and is also the largest wooden structure in the world. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The temple dates back to 752, although the present reconstruction was in 1692.

Also be sure to check out Nara Park, where shika deer mingle with humans.


How to get there

Todaiji is open from roughly 8am to 5pm, though hours vary with the season. Admission is 500 yen.

Todaiji is located near Nara station, which is a 45 min ride from Kyoto costing 690 yen.
