About

The temples and shrines of Nikko are a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the site of the famous warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu's tomb, and features numerous lavishly decorated temples in a wooded forest setting. Countless wood carvings and gold leaves were used to decorate the shrines in a way not seen elsewhere in Japan.

The most famous of Nikko's temples is Toshogu, which is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu who established the Tokugawa shogunate and ruled Japan for 250 years until 1868. Hundreds of stone steps lead up the temple to his grave.

The other shrines in the area are Rinnoji, Futarasan, and Taiyuinbyo.

Don't forget to check out Nikko Bridge too, a gracefully arching red bridge over a river.
