About
This place is small enough that everything lies within walking distance. A pleasant walk around town will bring you to the waterfront, museums, gardens, and government buildings. Sightseeing attractions include Te Papa (national museum), Museum of Wellington City & Sea, Cable Car, Botanic Gardens, and the Beehive among others.
There are numerous cafes and restaurants around, but Kiwi food is typically bland with “fush and chups” being the popular choice. Even Asian restaurants have toned down their flavors to suit the Kiwi taste. But drinking makes up for the lack of a dining experience! People usually start early, straight after work, and keep going until the bars close down.
A rose is a rose is a rose…but Kiwi English is not necessarily English as you know it. If you can understand the blokes on “Flight of the Conchords” – not to mention actually getting their brand of humor - then you’ll have no worries about getting on with the people here. They are generally an easygoing lot.
Weather is a regular part of conversation as you can go through four different seasons in one day! Frost can occur inland, as well as the occasional hail, during winter season. Take note: this harbour city isn’t nicknamed "Windy Welly" for nothing.
