About

Leon is the second largest city in Nicaragua, after the capital Managua.

Some of the things you can do while you’re there are:

1. Some great shopping for souvenirs and plenty of other stuff.

2. Go out for some dinner, because the town offers many different types of restaurants, from the fanciest to the more traditional, the prices are not expensive specially the more traditional ones.

3. One of the main attractions there are the most beautifully restored Spanish colonial style churches, and there are more than a dozen churches in great condition that you can tour. The catholic traditions here are very strong, as you will find people worshipping any time of day. Visitors often marvel at how the arched flying buttresses of the Cathedral of Leon, the biggest in Central America, could have been put in place with bare hands, and without the aid of the modern construction equipment.

4. Leon is a college town, and that’s why you will find cheap accommodations, delicious affordable cuisine and plenty of nighttime places to go.

5. An interesting Museum you have to visit is the Ruben Darío Museum, named after a famous Nicaraguan poet and Journalist. In this museum you’ll learn about his life, inspiration and legacy.

6. Take a walk on foot, bike or horse carriage and enjoy the beautiful scenery the city has to offer. If your destination is a bit too far away for walking, city trucks called Ruletos serve as the city's public transportation system and will take you almost anywhere you'll need to go for around three dollars.

7. Outside of the city, you will find volcanoes to climb and hike, like Telica and Cerro Negro Volcanoes, beaches, like Poneloya, where you can swim, snorkel and go on boats, and the fumaroles at San Jacinto whice are very interesting to see because of the angry bubbling noises and smoke produced right at the surface.
