Korean DMZ

About
The Korean DMZ is the safety zone separating North Korea from South Korea. It's the closest a normal person can get (and will want to get) to North Korea. You need a guide to take you inside because it's not really safe. But from inside the DMZ, you can see a museum depicting North Korean life and visit the negotiation room where the two sides come to talk. From the towers you can also see North Korean solders looking back at you with their binoculars, and admire North Korea's propaganda village where they make it seem like everything's ok....
It's a great way to experience history, but at the same time, it is an active combat zone so it's not exactly safe...and you tour with a crowd so you can never know when someone's going to do something to cause the other side to shoot.
How to get there

Looking into North Korea
You can't conduct your own DMZ tours nor may you simply show up at the site. You must arrange a tour with an agency. There's plenty and your hotel can probably find one for you. Alternatively, I hear there are DMZ only tours running from the airport if you happen to be in Seoul on a layover.
