About

Today, this Sleeping Giant is a favorite spot for trekking. "Enchanting" as the climbers describe its crater, Mt. Pinatubo is truly an awesome sight to behold. The trek is much different from the usual volcanoes/mountains because you'll have stretches of sand instead of forests and an almost Alpine mountain formation.

It was believed to be a dormant volcano for ages until it erupted in June 1991.
The Sleeping Giant killed 800 people with its 7.7 magnitude - the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded in the 20th century. Ashfall was recorded as far away as Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia.

One must take a 45-minute 4x4 ride to the foot of the mountain from Capas Tarlac to be able to start trekking for the crater. The ride will be exhilarating, and is comparable to a Disneyland ride as the 4x4 crosses varicolored streams and an endless plain volcanic sand. You can enjoy swimming and kayaking in the crater or simply have an overnight camp.

The safest and best time to scale the mountain is during the summer months of January to April.

How to get there

From Manila:
Take a bus bound for Lingayen or Dagupan and alight at Capas Tarlac (Victory Liner at Php100/$2).

You may also take your own vehicle directly to Sta. Juliana. From the North Expressway, exit at Sta. Inez. Take the Mc Arthur highway then pass by Banban and you will reach Capas Tarlac.

4X4 vehicles for rent are usually available from the town. Rentals cost is around Php600/$12.
