About
Kliczkow is a tiny town located roughly midway between Dresden and Wroclaw. It's most famous for it's castle. We used it as our base for a 3 day trip to the Boleslawiec area. The castle has been fully restored in recent years and is comfortable with all the mod cons, the service is good quality, and were always willing to help. The facilities are also in great condition because of the recent renovation. The pool is accompanied by two saunas, and has panoramic views over the garden at the back of the castle. The spa is set in the former wine cellar and has a very soothing and relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant served us tasty meals every evening, and a hearty breakfast buffet in the morning with an amazing array of choice covering all possible tastes. There are also two bars and a cafe adjoining the courtyard.
The castle itself is not your stereotypical grey stone structure, it's got more of a country manor feel, and was once indeed a residence for hunters. In the restaurant you can see a restored painting showing the day of the hunt. In the second courtyard there is space for a fire and you can get some sausages and roast them them with a drink and friends. The castle gives tours which are good fun and you can organise a ride through the local forest on a cart or take a ride at the local stables. You can also rent bikes to check out the surrounds. Oh and rather unusually, the castle also has a 'horse cemetary', where around 40 horses are buried, though sadly only 3 grave stones remain.
From the castle it's a short drive to Boleslawiec which is home to Poland's most prestiguous and famous pottery. You can take tours of the workshops ('maufaktura') there. Also highly recommended is a trip to the Borowski glass studio where you can see amazing works of art which are sought after collection pieces around the globe. Unfortunately, we went on a sunday, so we couldn't see them being made, but a trip during the week would mean you could see the blowers in action. Can find them at www.polish-pottery.com.pl and http://www.borowski-studio.com
We really had a great stay, with plenty to do during the day, and a great castle setting to come home to in the evening, so I'd highly recommend it.
