Mezquita Cathedral, Andalusia

About

The old Mezquita, now Santa María de Córdoba cathedral, is the most important monument in Cordoba. Construction started in the VIII century on top of San Vicente church. During Cordoba's caliphate expansion, works were done and after the Christian conquest in 1236 it was turned into a Cathedral. The mezquita was not demolished, the new Cathedral was built around it.

Since the beginning, the mezquita and cathedral went trough many renovations but the most controversial one was in 1523 when the central part of the old prayer room was transformed in the Renaissance style. As a result of all these renovations, we can now find gothic, plateresque, renaissance and baroque styles around the Cathedral.

The Mezquita is a nice day trip from Sevilla.
