About
In the Mugar Omni Theater, the world's largest film format is projected onto a five-story-tall IMAX Dome screen. It wraps audiences in larger-than-life images of flora, fauna, and faraway places. A state-of-the-art digital sound system completes the immersion effect.
The Charles Hayden Planetarium provides daily experiences for outer space. Audiences can glimpse everything from actual images of cosmic phenomena to universes we can still only imagine. In addition, there is a Friday night stargazing at the Gilliland Observatory, and they produce a monthly sky chart and viewing guide (PDF) for visitors to use at home.
If you like cinema, the 3D Digital is for you. Using polarized light rather than traditional red/blue lens filters, the high-definition system offers Museum audiences dramatically crisp images and an exciting presentation format to experience while in the Exhibit Halls.
For $5, you can enjoy the simulator, with journeys through space, the deep sea, tagging along with a water molecule, and many others.
One of the most visited sections is the butterfly garden, a tropical oasis overlooking the Charles River, where you can walk among free-flying butterlies from all over the world. The doors of the garden open every 15 minutes.
Every day, the museum offers a number of live demonstrations, most of which are free with the exhibit hall admission. The topics range from live animals, to lightning, technology, optical illusions and much more.
